Style reading
Art Nouveau: Do not assume ornamentation can date itself
Separate style from the production date by examining the vegetal lines, material, and manufacturer record together.

Style is not a certificate of originality
Vegetal curves and flowing lines may serve as a starting point for research. Since similar ornamentations were reused in later periods, appearance alone cannot be considered evidence of date or originality. Examine the manufacturer's signature, material, dimensions, and documented similar examples together.
- Photograph the signature and stamp
- Compare with the measurements and materials in the museum record
- Leave open the possibility of later period production
Questions & answers
Is every object with floral motifs Art Nouveau?
No. A motif alone does not define style or period; design, production technique, and source records should be evaluated together.
